EAA AirVenture Fly-In At Oshkosh, Wisconsin

One annual rite of passage in the AB9NN and KD8KRS household is the arrival of airplane chatter on two frequencies we have programmed in our Yaesu FT 857 D ham radios in our car and truck respectively.  One of the reasons I bought the Yaesu FT 857 D mobile ham radios not only the ability to work a very wide range (including 60 meters) of ham radio frequencies but also the so-called wideband scanning capability.  Wideband in this instance means lots of frequencies.  This radio not only acts as an excellent HF and UHF / VHF + 6 and 60 meter ham radio – it also acts as what many people commonly call a “police scanner”.  Many people buy police scanners but do not realize that they can scan many many other types of communications than just police.  Fire, ambulance, business, personal, etc..  Aircraft and air traffic control frequencies are included in this wideband police scanner type of capability.

The Yaesu FT 857 D radio comes with 200 programmable memory locations.  Each one can contain a frequency to listen to and / or transmit on along with an alpha-numeric text area for identification such as “OSHKOSH1” for one runway’s air traffic control frequency.  Many people may have come to this particular blog post just to quickly find the scanner frequencies for the EAA AirVenture Fly-in at Oshkosh, Wisconsin.  For the 2011 event, let me direct you to the following link:

There is more!  You may also find this next link of some use.  I sure did!

scanning the EAA fly-in with a Yaesu 857-d ham radio for free!

Jane, KD8KRS and I decided to park our car (for free) in the back end of a restaurant next to the Super 8 Motel.  Along the back of the parking lot is a fence of Whitman Field – the home landing strips for the EAA AirVenture Fly-in at Oshkosh, Wisconsin.  We had a great view of landings on the first Sunday before the start of the show.  We listened to air traffic control chatter as we watched planes of all sorts and various designs land after long flights to the show.  It was quite entertaining for a good hour and a half.  But, on a hot Sunday afternoon, we decided that if we left and got some ice cream at a Hardee’s across the street we would arrive back in Appleton, Wisconsin just in time for dinner.

I hope that you can make some use of these resources and I hope that you enjoy the shows as much as we have over the years!

Stay radio active!
